How to Add an AI agent to Your WordPress Website

This guide shows you how to add your ChatterEase AI agent to a WordPress site. You paste one short script into your site's footer, then clear your cache. There is no ChatterEase plugin to install: the script is the whole integration.

WordPress: 40.2% of all websites, and 58.7% of known CMS installations (W3Techs, September 2026)

  • Takes about 5 minutes
  • Copy and paste, no coding
  • Free plan, no card needed

Before you start

Check you have these ready. It saves a trip back halfway through.

  • A ChatterEase account. You start on the Free plan, and you do not need a card to start.
  • An AI agent trained on your own content, such as your website pages or files (PDF, Word, text). Ask it a few test questions in the dashboard first, so you know the answers are right before visitors see it.
  • Admin access to your WordPress site, so you can add code and publish changes.
  • A self-hosted WordPress site where you can install plugins. If your site is on WordPress.com, you need a plan that allows plugins or custom code.

How to add ChatterEase to WordPress, step by step

  1. Step 1: Copy your embed code from ChatterEase

Log in to ChatterEase and go to Dashboard, then AI agents. Open the agent you want on your site and click the Embed tab. Copy the code under "Embed with a widget script". It already has your agent ID in it.

    <script async src="https://chatterease.com/embed/YOUR_AGENT_ID/widget.js"></script>

Tip: The code above is an example. Copy yours from the Embed tab, because it has your own agent ID where this one says YOUR_AGENT_ID.

  2. Step 2: Install a header and footer code plugin

In your WordPress admin, go to Plugins, then Add New. Search for "Insert Headers and Footers" and install and activate WPCode. Any plugin that adds code to your site footer works the same way.

Tip: A plugin is the safest choice. Your code stays put when you update or change your theme. Code pasted into footer.php is lost on the next theme update.

  3. Step 3: Paste the script into the Footer box

Open the plugin's Header & Footer page. In WPCode it is under Code Snippets in the left menu. Paste your ChatterEase script into the Footer box and click Save.

Tip: No plugin? Many themes have a footer scripts box in their theme options. On a block theme you can also go to Appearance, then Editor, edit the footer template part, and add a Custom HTML block with the script.

  4. Step 4: Clear your cache

If you use a caching or speed plugin such as WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache or W3 Total Cache, clear its cache now. Do the same for your host's cache and any CDN, like Cloudflare. Until you do, visitors may keep getting the old copy of your pages without the script.

  5. Step 5: Check that it works

Open your live site in a private or incognito window, so you see it the way a new visitor does. Look for the ChatterEase launcher in the bottom-right corner (or bottom-left, if you moved it in your agent's settings). Click it and ask a question your pages answer, like your opening hours or your returns policy.

Let an AI assistant add it for you

If WordPress has an AI assistant built in, or you use ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, you can hand this job to it. Some assistants can make the change for you; others will tell you exactly where to click. Either way, the prompt below keeps it to one small change.

  1. 1. In your ChatterEase dashboard, open AI agents, pick your agent and go to the Embed tab. Copy the embed code.
  2. 2. Paste it into the box below. Your real code goes into the prompt in place of YOUR_AGENT_ID.
  3. 3. Copy the prompt and paste it into your AI assistant. Check its answer before you apply any change.
  4. 4. Open your live site in a private window and ask the AI agent a question to make sure it works.

Find it in your dashboard: AI agents, open your agent, then the Embed tab. We put it into the prompt for you. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Leave this empty and the prompt keeps YOUR_AGENT_ID. Replace it with your real code before you send it.

Prompt for your AI assistant
I want to add the ChatterEase chat widget to my WordPress website. Please add the code below for me. If you can't make the change yourself, tell me exactly where to click and what to paste.

The code:
<script async src="https://chatterease.com/embed/YOUR_AGENT_ID/widget.js"></script>

What I need:
1. Add it to the site-wide footer, just before the closing </body> tag. Use a header and footer code plugin (for example WPCode) or my theme's footer code setting. Do not edit theme files directly, so a theme update does not remove it.
2. Load it on every page of the site, once. If this script is already there, don't add it again.
3. Paste it exactly as it is. Keep the async attribute and don't change the URL.
4. Don't change, move or delete any other code, theme settings or content.
5. When you're done, tell me what you changed and where, so I can undo it later.
6. Tell me how to check it works: open the live site in a private window and look for the chat button in the bottom corner.

If my plan or my permissions don't allow custom code, tell me what I need instead of trying a workaround.

The prompt asks the assistant not to touch anything else and to tell you what it changed, so you can undo it. If it can't add custom code on your WordPress plan, it should say so; the steps above still work.

If the widget does not show up

Work down this list. Most problems on WordPress come from one of these, and each one takes a minute to check.

Your pages are still cached

Clear the cache in your caching plugin (WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache and similar), in your hosting control panel, and in your CDN. Then reload the page in a private window.

A speed plugin delays or combines JavaScript

Settings like "delay JavaScript" or "combine JavaScript" can hold the script back until someone scrolls or taps, or stop it from running. Add chatterease.com to the plugin's exclusion list for those settings, then clear the cache again.

Your WordPress.com plan does not allow custom code

WordPress.com only allows plugins and custom scripts on some plans. If you cannot install a plugin or add a script, check your plan in your WordPress.com account.

The Custom HTML block removed the script

WordPress only lets administrators save script tags in blocks. Log in as an administrator, or use the footer plugin method instead.

Your site has a Content-Security-Policy

Some sites, security plugins and hosts send a Content-Security-Policy header that blocks outside scripts. It needs to allow https://chatterease.com in script-src (for the script) and in frame-src (for the chat window, which opens in a frame). If you open your browser's developer console, a blocked script shows up as a red error that mentions the policy.

An ad blocker or privacy extension in your own browser

Some blockers hide chat launchers. Try a private window with extensions turned off, a different browser, or your phone on mobile data.

The launcher shows, but the agent does not answer

Open the agent in your ChatterEase dashboard and check it says Active, not Paused. A paused agent shows as offline to visitors. Also make sure it has finished training on at least one source.

Tips for WordPress

Train it on the pages people ask about

For a service business or blog, start with your About, Services, Pricing, Contact and FAQ pages. For a WooCommerce store, add your shipping and returns policies and your best-selling product pages. You can paste your site address and let ChatterEase read the pages for you.

Keep your agent trained after you change your site

Your AI agent answers from what it was trained on. When you change a page, open the Train tab and click Update now on that website source. On Growth and Pro you can also switch on Auto-update, and ChatterEase will refresh that source for you on a schedule.

Use the plugin, not the theme files

Theme updates replace footer.php, so a script pasted there disappears without warning. A header and footer plugin keeps the code separate from your theme.

Collect leads and hand off to a person

Every plan lets a visitor ask for a person through a contact form. On Growth and Pro you can also turn on a lead capture form, a greeting bubble beside the launcher, and an email alert when someone asks for a person.

Lead capture, the greeting bubble and Auto-update come with Growth and Pro. Compare plans.

Why WordPress sites use ChatterEase

  • Works with any WordPress theme, including Divi, Elementor and Avada sites
  • No ChatterEase plugin to keep updated, just one script tag
  • Answers WooCommerce questions about shipping, returns and products
  • Stays in place through theme updates when added with a footer plugin
  • Loads with the async attribute, so it does not hold up your page
  • Opens full screen on phones, so it is easy to use on mobile

Questions about ChatterEase on WordPress

No. ChatterEase is added with one script tag, so there is no ChatterEase plugin to install or keep updated. You use a general header and footer plugin, such as WPCode, to place the script in your site footer.

Yes. Train your AI agent on your product pages, shipping policy, returns policy and FAQ. It then answers customer questions about those topics on every page where the script loads, including product pages.

The script loads with the async attribute, so the browser keeps building your page while it downloads. The chat window runs in its own frame, separate from your theme's code. If you use a speed plugin, exclude chatterease.com from any "delay JavaScript" setting so the launcher shows up right away.

Yes. The script sits in your site footer, outside your theme layout and page builder, so it works the same with Elementor, Divi, Beaver Builder, the block editor or a classic theme.

Yes. Instead of adding the script to the site-wide footer, add it in a Custom HTML block on only the pages where you want it. The launcher then shows on those pages and nowhere else.

Yes. The launcher shows on phones and tablets, and on small screens the chat opens full screen so it is easy to read and type in.

Delete the script from your plugin's Footer box (or from the Custom HTML block), save, and clear your cache. The launcher is gone on the next page load.
